Lech Wałęa with support for protesters in Iran
The social situation in Iran has remained tense since last year. Protests by citizens demanding respect for the principles of freedom and democracy continue in the country. President Lech Wałęsa, along with other former world leaders, has signed an open letter expressing support for the protesters, addressed to, among others, US President Joe Biden.
"We encourage you to stand in solidarity with the people of Iran in their quest for a secular and democratic republic where no person, regardless of religion or birth, is treated with dignity and respect. (...) We call on your nations to stand with the Iranian people in their quest for change and to take decisive action against the current regime," reads the letter addressed to the leaders of the US, Canada, the UK, and the EU.
Among the signatories of the letter there are many world-renowned politicians and intellectuals, including former UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, former US Vice President Mike Pence, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, but also Polish politicians, including President Bronislaw Komorowski or Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz.
