On 5. December president Lech Wałęsa took part in the official funeral of the 41st president of the United States, George H.W. Bush. in Washington.

As Lech Wałęsa has said many times, president H.W. Bush played a significant role in the success of Polish transformation, supporting Poland in its way towards sovereignty. Both presidents, with their common struggle for freedom in Europe, were in a good private relations.

The presence of Lech Wałęsa was noticed by foreign media and prominent politicians from around the world, e.g. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or Angela Merkel.
